Is Orajel Safe for Kids?

If you have come to our office and asked about Orajel for toddlers, this is always our response...NO! The articles that are coming out today explaining the risks of Orajel are not new news, they have been out for awhile!

Benzocaine can be harmful to babies and children, because it can cause Methemoglobinemia. It is VERY RARE but is VERY REAL! It causes low levels of oxygen to the blood, and can be deadly!

Just because something is sold in a store, does not mean that it is safe. Just because there is a cute baby on the box, does not mean that it is safe to use!

So what can you use instead of Orajel, especially for teething infants?

Here are a few ideas:
1. placing a soft teething ring or pacifier in the freezer (not frozen) for quick relief
2. massaging your child's gums
3. if they are over 6 months, Ibuprofen for the inflammation and discomfort

I'm sure many people over the years have used Orajel for their toddler and everything was fine, but when there are other options, why put your children at risk?
